'Fractured'

The concept behind this piece is an exploration into fragility and its finished form was completely driven by the process. The finish involved scorching the London Plane with fire and applying a subtle blue tint to the timber. The simple casket construction was distorted by the fire and, as a consequence, fractured mainly at one point. Focusing on these fractures, the maker has reshaped and evolved the form to celebrate this flaw, adding some brass splints to further support the structure and thereby highlighting its weaknesses but also the beauty in its boldness. A unique one off piece.
