Can you help us?

We are looking for a gallery assistant!

If you are passionate about our country’s bespoke furniture and jewellery and love the idea of supporting designer-makers, this could be the role for you!

We are a contemporary gallery in Birmingham’s famous and vibrant Jewellery Quarter. We exhibit both contemporary designer jewellery and bespoke furniture from all around the United Kingdom. The gallery owner and jeweller Michele White has her workshop in the basement below the gallery and curates all the work.

Michele worked in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter for 35 years, before opening Artisan Alchemy Gallery 7 years ago. The Gallery houses bespoke furniture as well as a small group of designer jewellers as well as Michele herself who has her workshop in the basement. There are also rented workbenches, workshops, and a meeting room, each of which has to be marketed by the gallery assistant.

With a focus on promoting the gallery’s online presence and assisting with administration and customer service, being a gallery assistant at Artisan Alchemy is an exciting job where each day is different. The position of gallery assistant is a part-time job share that includes some Saturdays, but timing is flexible.

The position includes:

  • Sales assistant
  • Opening and closing the gallery - setting up precious jewellery from the safe and removing it overnight
  • Customer service – general queries via email, telephone and face to face
  • Interaction with designer maker suppliers
  • Social media and marketing
  • Ensuring the website is kept up to date including photography and the blog
  • General administration and ensuring the smooth running of the gallery
  • Marketing and booking of workshops and meeting room

The role is very diverse and requires a great deal of responsibility.

Skills, experience and competencies:

  • Retail experience, preferably in a similar role
  • Customer service experience
  • A high level of computer skills – good academic competence
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Well organised with good attention to detail
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Competence in social media skills
  • Understanding of ecommerce platforms such as Shopify and the ability to implement them

Not all the above are essential, but it is important to have the ability to learn.

Michele worked in Birmingham Jewellery Quarter for 35 years, before opening Artisan Alchemy Gallery eight years ago. The Gallery houses bespoke furniture as well as a small group of designer jewellers as well as Michele herself who has her workshop in the basement.
